Dmitri Šostakovitš purki pahimmat patoutumansa kymmenenteen sinfoniaansa. Jazz-legenda Keith Jarrett kirjoitti Elegian isoäitinsä muistolle. Viulisti ja kapellimestari John Storgårds tulkitsee myrskyn, vimman ja kaipauksen säveliä kaksoisroolissa.

Romantiikan purkauksia 1700-luvulla enteillyt Sturm und Drang (myrsky ja kiihko) oli lyhytkestoinen mutta sitäkin kauaskantoisempi taidesuuntaus. Luomisen tuskaa ja olemisen ahdistusta korostanut tyyli kiehtoi etenkin kirjailijoita, mutta myös säveltäjät valjastivat tunteensiirtoa tavoittelevan voiman käyttöönsä. Tunnetuin heistä on Joseph Haydn, jonka sinfonia nro 52 c-mollissa on sekä riipaiseva että levoton.

Dmitri Šostakovitšin halveksiva asenne valtakoneistoa kohtaan paljastui vasta hänen kuolemansa jälkeen. Vuonna 1953 syntyneestä sinfoniasta odotettiin kunnianosoitusta hiljattain kuolleen diktaattorin muistolle, mutta sinfoniassa puhuukin hirmuhallitsijan haamu – katkeruuden kyllästämä kauhu, epätoivo, sammumaton viha.

Kapellimestari ja viulisti John Storgårds esiintyy jälleen kaksoisroolissa, kun hän soittaa Keith Jarrettin isoäidilleen kirjoittaman Elegian kaihoisat viulusoolot.
