Väinö Linnan?Täällä Pohjantähden alla?on vastaansanomattoman väkevä prologi nyky-Suomelle: kuinka olemme kansakuntana tulleet tähän, missä nyt olemme.?Lauri Maijalan ohjauksessa Linnan rakastetusta romaanitrilogiasta syntyy intensiivinen, kaunis ja koskettava historiallinen draama kansakunnan synnystä ja kasvukivuista.

Nälkä ja näköalattomuus, katkeruus epäoikeudenmukaisesta tulonjaosta, äärimmilleen kärjistynyt poliittinen vastakkainasettelu, kaoottinen maailmantilanne... Muun muassa näistä aineksista sai alkunsa tapahtumien vyöry, joka kulminoitui keväällä 1918 Suomen sisällissodaksi. Sodaksi, joka oli lajissaan yksi Euroopan verisimpiä. Tragediaksi, jonka haavat yhä uudestaan avautuvat, kun niistä yritetään vaieta.

Pohjantähden lukuisten, värikkäiden henkilöiden kohtaloista piirtyy esiin yli puoli vuosisataa suomalaista historiaa, joka ulottuu Venäjän suurruhtinaskunnasta sotienjälkeiseen itsenäiseen Suomeen. Valokeilaan nousevat erityisesti kaksi perhettä, Koskelat ja Salpakarit, joiden tarinoiden kautta kansakunnan kohtalonhetket nähdään sekä rahvaan että eliitin näkökulmasta.

Maijalan ohjaama suuri suomalainen klassikko seisoo jalat suossa, mutta katse tähtitaivaan kirkkaudessa. Se muistuttaa, järkyttää ja lohduttaa myös meitä nykyisen maailmanajan eläjiä, kuinka pieni ja avuton yksittäinen ihminen on historian suurissa murroskohdissa.

Pohjantähti on Lauri Maijalan ensiohjaus Kansallisteatterissa

Ensimmäistä kertaa Kansallisteatterissa työskentelevä Lauri Maijala on Suomen maineikkaimpia nykyohjaajia, jonka ansioluetteloon lukeutuu kiitettyjen teatteritöiden lisäksi myös elokuvia ja televisiosarjoja. Hänen ohjaustöitään ovat olleet mm. sisällissotaa ja sen seurauksia käsittelevät Veriruusut (KOM-teatteri, 2018) ja Punaorvot (Helsingin Kaupunginteatteri, 2020). Linnan Tuntemattoman sotilaan Maijala on ohjannut oopperateoksena Oulun Kaupunginteatteriin (2014).
