Tarinoita pelon ja toivon vuosikymmeniltä

Esa Leskisen Toinen tasavalta kertoo Suomen ponnisteluista säilyttää demokraattinen valtiomuotonsa Neuvostoliiton painostuksen, kansainvälisten konfliktien ja sisäisten poliittisten ristiriitojen puristuksessa. Esitys on Leskisen demokratia-aiheisen esityssarjan itsenäinen neljäs osa, jonka edeltäjä oli huippusuosittu Ensimmäinen tasavalta (2022).

Toinen tasavalta on älykäs, viihdyttävä ja elävän ajankuvan värittämä esitys, joka vyöryttää kansalliselle päänäyttämölle historian äkkikäänteitä ja henkilöitä sodanjälkeisistä vaaran vuosista 1980-luvun juppiaikaan ja neuvostoimperiumin romahdukseen.

Se on tarina kansakunnasta, joka vastoin kaikkia todennäköisyyksiä kykeni torjumaan itseensä kohdistuneet uhat, sopimaan keskinäiset riitansa ja samalla rakentamaan tasa-arvoisen, kaikki kansalaiset huomioon ottavan hyvinvointiyhteiskunnan. Esityksen keskushenkilönä ja aikakautensa itseoikeutettuna symbolina toimii Urho Kekkonen. Nuoren Kekkosen roolissa nähdään Janne Reinikainen, vanhempaa valtiomiestä esittää Vesa Vierikko.

Toinen tasavalta on kertomus historiasta, joka toistaa itseään. Se on terävä muistutus siitä, kuinka demokratia ei ole koskaan itsestään selvää, vaan vaatii kaikkina aikoina jatkuvaa kamppailua säilyäkseen elinvoimaisena.

Dokumentaarinen esitys perustuu kokonaisuudessaan autenttisiin lähteisiin: muistiinpanoihin, päiväkirjoihin, tutkimuskirjallisuuteen ja aikalaiskuvauksiin. Se kohdistaa katseensa vallan ja historian kulissien taakse ja näyttää, millaisen paineen alle poliittinen todellisuus voi alistaa yksittäisen ihmisen.

Toisen tasavallan musiikista vastaa Jussi Tuurna, joka myös soittaa livenä näyttämöllä.
